It's my Birthday Today!

It’s my birthday today! Yes, it’s the 23rd June, the beginning of summer if you live in the northern hemisphere, and I’m very much a summery person. Ok, that’s quite a silly thing to write seeing that I was born in Indonesia in the tropics, and brought up in the southern hemisphere.

This year I’m celebrating my birthday in a very special way surrounded by all my family – the ones that live in Spain that is. Its a busy weekend, so busy in fact that I must confess that this post is, ahem, scheduled.

One of my beautiful cousins is getting married. I wish her all the best of happiness! We are all very happy for her. And for ourselves because we get to see each other in the celebration. We also have an Indonesian party lined up – where my Spanish family will be attending. Lets not forget too that it’s my birthday which is another cause of celebration.

For my birthday, Mr. H. has got me the coolest camera ever! The truth is that I received it a few weeks ago so that by today I would be able to minimally understand how it works to make gorgeous photos of my cousin.

The camera is a Fujifilm XF1. It comes in black, brown and red. Mr. H. very tastefully (for my taste that is) chose me the black one. I’m no photography expert (yet!), but I understand that this camera has many professional traits while being compact enough for someone like me to lug around. Of course the camera is also for me to be able to improve my photos for Papaya Pieces. Now I’ll also be reading the photography blogs trying to make sense out of things like: shutter speed and mm. Right now I still haven’t figured what they mean. If anyone can shed some light and help me out, please do. I really love it, so one thousand thank yous to Mr. H.

So how old am I now? Let’s just leave it at 30 something, like stated in my about page…

Thank you for reading!

No way! Mine too! You are now the 5th person I know with the same birthday. I’m 36 today. I have been given a day’s cookery course at a vegetarian cookery school. A proving basket for my sourdough breads and My parents got me a special edition Ludovico Einaudi sheet music box set, with some of his original manuscripts shown. Happy Birthday!!!! 🙂

You should be able to change the aperture control (thats the f4 type number). If you want the thing you are taking a photo of to be sharply focused but the things behind to be a bit more blurry then set it to be its lowest number (usually f2.8, but in your case is even better at f1.8) which gives you the biggest aperture. This also helps in low light, because the bigger the aperture, the more light gets in, so the camera will go with a faster shutter speed which makes sure that the image will be sharper because there should be less chance of camera shape.
These should be changeble even on one of the automatic setting of P, but if you put it on A, then this gives u aperture piority, which means you set the aperture to what you want. and the camera will work out the shutter speed.

This is great for indoors or close-ups or art ones where everything in front or behind the subject is blurry. If you want things far behind and in front to be in focus you need a small aperature, (big f number). this is better for landscapes.

If you want the camera to over-expose (i.e be lighter than it would normally be) then change the EV setting to +.03EV or higher if you want. likewise for darker you can do a – EV setting.

On our camera I stick to shooting on P, this gives the camera automatic control, but allows you to make changes on the fly for each shot such as the aperature/iso/EV settings.

    have fun playing

Wow you seem like a real pro! I just got back and when I have a long moment I will be sitting in front of your message here with my camera re-reading every single word and trying it out. This weekend at my cousins wedding I had really good luck that they let the photographer enjoy dinner too, so he got to sit at my table, and I got to ask away a load of photography questions! I’ll let you know how your instructions go 🙂

The other thing to play with is the “white balance”. normally you can leave it on automatic. But it is a good idea if you are taking photos inside to play about with this setting. Maybe take the same photo over and over again, first time on auto, then the rest of the times on each of the different settings. (Making a note of the order you took them in) then on the computer you can look at how the different settings made the photo look. It can make a difference especially in artificial light.

Ah I’m happy now, I must have SOME photo instinct. My night photos had really bad lighting so the first thing I did with this camera was check out the white balance. It has quite a few white balance filters depending on the actual lighting, or an automatic one too.
