Meert, A Legend Since 1761

Confiture extra Meert, France

Meert is the best sweet, chocolate, waffle, pastry and bakery shop in Lille, France. Meert (pronounced: Mert) was founded in 1761. It’s name comes from Mr. Meert, of Flemish origin. Then again, Lille is a town in the North of France that is rather close to the border with Belgium, thus Flemish influences there are not uncommon.

Even if only to feast your eyes through the window, Meert is spectacularly delicious. I have been inside a few times, bought waffles plus other indulgences, and I can guarantee that they were superb. Needless to say, everything in Meert is also very expensive.

When I arrived there this summer, they had a surprise: an ice cream cart in front of the shop for summer.

In my previous post I showed a waffle stall from a market in the North of France. I must say that Meert makes, well, way more posher waffles. Not only are their waffles very posh, they are somewhat an authority in waffles. So much, in fact, that the story goes that General Charles de Gaulle used to order his waffles to be delivered to Paris all the way from Lille.

Apart from the most wonderful waffles, Meert also makes the most wonderful anything French sweet else you can think of.

In Meert’s website, I see that they’ve just opened a store in Paris. Lucky Parisians.

You’d have to jump through the screen and the shop window 😉 or just walk into the shop, hehe.
